The pain of waiting

As I told you in a previous post we did not get a puppy right away. It took a lot of time before we got out loving sweetheart, 1½ years to be exact. The fact is that most of us wait quite a while for the perfect puppy. Some only contact 1 kennel where the get on a waiting list, some get on a few waitinglists. We were very active, contacting alot of Danish, Swedish and Norvegian kennels. We wanted to talk to these people before getting on any list. It was VERY important for us. Later I will make a guide for you new puppy-buyers to use when looking for the right puppy for you.

For now, I will tell about my personal experience with contacting kennels and waiting.

We actually did not decide to proceed with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier before I found an unborn litter up for sale. We found a lot of other breeds that were similar to the Staffy in size, level of activity and temper. We couldn't decide which one, so when I found a litter in the colour i wanted we decided that it was a Staffy we needed. And lucky for that :-)

As I told in an earlier post we waited for the puppy, but there was only 1 puppy - a boy, so we had to keep on looking. Then we started to search for kennels in Denmark. We quickly learned that there wasn't too many reds to choose from, so we just contacted a lot of Danish breeders that had only 1 red dog. Some of the dogs didn't appeal to us, and some of the breeders didn't either.

One day one of the breeders wrote back to us, and we started writing. This breeder was located in Jylland. She had a lot of red dogs, which outer appearance appealed to us. She had planned a mating between to red dogs and one weekend we packed and drove both to Fyn and Jylland to see both the mother and the father of the litter. It was very important for me that we would see both the dam and the sire, and the dam BEFORE the puppies were born. You can so easily get attached when there are small puppies involved.

We saw both and liked the overall appearance. Looking back, we were newbies and SO naive. Do not believe everything a breeder tells you.

When the bitch finally gave birth there was only 1 girl out of a big litter, and the breeder wanted to keep the girl. I was devastated, not again. At this point we had waited actively for over a year. I couln't believe that this dream was about to be taken from me again.

We had all along been contacting a lot of kennels in the Scandinavia. And one cold day one of them wrote back, Kennel Emmerdales. She wrote that she didn't have any puppies at the moment, and wasn't planning on having any for a while BUT we sounded so nice so she would recommend us for another kennel she knew had some female puppies up for sale. A light fire started in my heart - what this our little puppygirl just waiting?
And guess what, it was.

We quickly contaced the kennel "Tyrara's Snowflake's". When we did the puppies were about 3 weeks, and there was pictures of them on their website. It was a beautiful litter of 5, one boy and 4 girls. We did a lot of writing with the breeder, and it didn't take long for me to realise that this person was indeed a good person, and the right breeder for us. Along the process I felt incredibly safe and it just felt right.

There were 3 girls for us to choose from. After a description of their personalities we decided that our puppy was to be chosen from only 2 females. It was hard for us to choose, but since we wanted to show the breeder told us which one would probably be the better one for showing. We ended up choosing her, Tyrara's Snowflake's Fonda Star, the puppy the breeder had recommended and the biggest of the girls.
And what a choice it was.
